Closet Transformation Plan
This is an example scenario for a New York apartment’s closets.
Usually New York apartment closets come with 2 shelves, a coat hanging rod, and a floor space. The general layout that I go with is
Storage bins on top
Closet rod used for hanging clothes
Floor space used for a shoes and storage bins with heavier items
A general overview of the process I use is below. These steps may not apply to every client, the approach is very individualized and depends on the specific situation.
- I’ll remove everything from the closet, though this depends on how full it is
- I’ll clean the closet, since it’s now easier to access all the nooks and crannies
- I’ll work with you to categorize items and determine which we should get rid of
- Once we have a clear closet we can begin to think about the best possible use case for the space
- Then we’ll begin to put your stuff back into your closet, while keeping the general plan in mind
I do work with clients on creating a broad but clear labeling system that can stick around after I finish my work. I try to categorize without being too strict about it so that it makes sense for your use case. Once again, it’s difficult to say without understanding what you’re looking to organize in your closet.
I’ve listed a few products below that I would generally recommend (I use a few of them myself). Whether I would use them for your home would depend on budget, need, and your home’s style.
