FAQs about senior downsizing

How is senior downsizing different from regular organizing?

Senior downsizing involves significantly more emotional labor. Every item may have decades of memory attached, and decisions take longer. We move at the client's pace, preserve what matters, and coordinate with family members who can't be in the room. It's organizing plus life-transition support.

Can family members be involved even if they live far away?

Yes. We regularly video-call or text-photo family members during sorting sessions so they can weigh in on heirlooms, memorabilia, and furniture decisions in real time. Many of our clients have adult children living in other states.

What happens to items the client doesn't want to keep?

We coordinate donation pickups (Salvation Army, Housing Works, local charities), arrange estate sale consignment for valuable pieces, facilitate heirloom distribution to family, and handle disposal of items with no resale value. Nothing gets dumped — we find the right home for everything.

Do you work on weekends or accommodate medical appointments?

Yes. We schedule around doctor's appointments, rest days, and family visits. Most senior downsizing projects work best with shorter 3–4 hour sessions spread over 2–4 weeks rather than back-to-back full days.

Can you help set up the new home too?

Absolutely — and we strongly recommend it. We coordinate the move, unpack completely, and set up the new space so it feels familiar and functional from day one. Senior clients who move into a fully set-up home adjust dramatically better than those left with boxes.

Is this covered by long-term care insurance?

Generally no, though some geriatric care management policies include organizing as a covered benefit. Check with your insurance provider. We can also work with professional care managers as part of a broader transition plan.
